2012 CLAN GATHERING

Join your fellow clan members at Hunterston

Our Clan Chief, Madam Pauline, has released details of the festivities for the triennial International Clan Hunter Gathering to be held at the Clan seat, Hunterston Castle in West Kilbride, Scotland from 20th to 22nd July 2012, together with an additonal day tour of the Isle of Arran on Monday 23rd July. With activities ranging from story-telling and re-enactments to pipe band music - and of course hearty eating and perhaps a little imbibing - a good time is guaranteed for all.

Combine a visit to Scotland with seeing the London Olympics which commences of 25th July. This is the time for your trip to the UK !

Send an Email to your Clan Officer Richard Hunter if you think this could form part of your plans for 2012. He can provide further details and it will help Madam Pauline with her estimates of the numbers. Richard and his wife Lindy are looking forward keenly to the trip, and we have indications of at least two other Australian couples who are hoping to make the trip.

AUSSIES VISIT CASTLE Russell and Tracey at Hunterston 2010

Richard and Lindy Hunter were guests of Tom Hunter, Clan Officer for Clan Hunter Canada, and his wife Christine at the Clan's annual get-together in Fergus, Ontario. Their annual meeting is held at the same time as the Fergus Highland Gathering. A great time was had by all, with the Tattoo, 3 days of competitions, dancing, and of course manning of the Clan tent to "meet and greet". A wonderful evening, dining with the Canadian members, with music, singing and dancing provided by Tom (on guitar) and his multi-talented family.

Russell and Tracey at Hunterston 2010

Russell and Tracey Hunter recently visited the Hunterston Castle as part of their 25th wedding anniversary celebration trip - congrats to you both from all the Clan ! Given a grand tour of the castle and grounds by local clan member and offical guide, William Hunter ORH, it was a memorable experience. Tracey says "It was actually quite moving for us to be there. William was wonderful."

Please note the Castle is not generally open to the public, but clan members are always welcome to make an appointment with William to arrange a visit.

CAN YOU HELP ?

John Hunter - Governor of NSW

Portrait of Vice-Admiral John Hunter c. 1812 by William Bennett

The National Library of Australia is preparing a publication on the life and art of John Hunter 1737-1821, Admiral and Governor of New South Wales.

The Library is privileged to hold Hunter’s First Fleet sketchbook. The publication will be one of three in a series about the Library’s great treasures.

As part of their research they are trying to trace anyone who may be related to a Commander John Moore, a Mr James Moore Kelly and a Miss Elizabeth Allen Kelly. These three people consigned items of Admiral Hunter memorabilia to auction at Leonard Joel’s in Melbourne in 1932. They may have been related to Admiral Hunter through Hunter’s sister Mrs Janet Maule, and thence by descent through a number of intervening generations with the surname Kerr.

If you can help, please send an email to Linda Groom at the National Library.
